ECOWAS adopts electronic certificate of origin to boost regional trade

As part of its trade modernization and facilitation strategy, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has officially launched the Electronic Certificate of Origin (ECO). This reform marks a major step forward for businesses and exporters in the region, simplifying administrative procedures and strengthening economic integration.

To date, obtaining a certificate of origin – an essential document to benefit from tariff preferences in regional trade – was often a lengthy and costly paper process. The introduction of the electronic certificate of origin now allows exporters to submit their applications online, obtain faster validation and significantly reduce clearance times.

By gradually replacing physical documents, this initiative also helps to combat fraud and falsification, while ensuring greater transparency in trade.

The adoption of eCO is part of ECOWAS's desire to increase intraregional trade, which remains below its potential. This optimisation of customs procedures should lead to a significant increase in trade between the 15 West African Member States.

With reduced formalities and reduced costs, businesses, especially SMEs, will be able to access neighbouring markets more easily and increase their competitiveness. This measure also aligns with the establishment of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AFTAAf), which aims to create a large common market on a continental scale.

Beyond the immediate benefits to businesses, this digital transition reflects ECOWAS's ambition to modernize its regulatory frameworks and strengthen regional integration. By facilitating trade and promoting better coordination between customs administrations, the electronic certificate of origin lays the foundations for a more fluid, secure and harmonised trade.

However, its success will depend on the adoption of the digital platform by economic actors and the support of companies in this transition. Awareness-raising and training campaigns will be essential to ensure the support of all actors in the export chain.

With this progress, ECOWAS demonstrates a clear commitment to modernization and competitiveness, paving the way for a more dynamic and inclusive intra-regional trade.
