Bulgaria will be able to adopt the euro from 1 January 2026
The European Council approved Bulgaria's adoption of the euro as from 1 January 2026.
Decision (EU) 2025/1407 confirms that Bulgaria is now meeting the convergence criteria set by the European Union for joining the euro area (cf. Bulgaria: changeover to the euro in 2026).
Technically, the euro will replace the Bulgarian Lev (BGN) at the conversion rate set by the European Central Bank (the exact rate will be published in a later decision). A transitional period is foreseen for dual circulation, with possible payments in BGN and EUR for a limited period.
The euro area will thus expand again, representing 21 out of 27 Member States. Only the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Romania, Sweden and Denmark will not be part of the euro area: either for economic reasons or because some countries do not at present wish to include the euro.
