INDIA: political highlights and economic performance of Narendra MODI

Elections for the new Indian Parliament opened since 11/04/2019 ended yesterday: 900 million registered voters assess the mid-term balance of Prime Minister Narendra MODI. A contrasting picture of the policy that sparked enthusiasm five years ago with an ambitious Indian modernization plan.

With a 7.3% growth in 2018 and inflation limited to 4%, India has resumed colors, but...

The « Make in India » Didn't convince!

The value added per Indian employee is almost at the level of Cameroon, far behind China.

With a World Bank Doing Business ranking in sharp improvement (77th against 134th in 2014), and despite courageous measures (withdrawal of 86% of the cash from the market to combat the shadow economy, harmonisation of VAT rates, tax simplification) India's main weakness remains corruption.

The World Economic Forum list still many obstacles to the development of the economy, old demons of India such as theinadequate infrastructure, inefficiency of bureaucracy, and low qualification of the labour force.

India will soon be the most populous country on the planet, in the process of overcoming China... but with a GDP 6 times lower than its main competitor!

The counting of elections is underway...
