Started in 2004, the dispute between the two aircraft manufacturers still makes waves 16 years later!
In mid-October the WTO gave its green light to the European Union to impose until 4 billion customs taxes on American products (cf.Import origin USA: WTO will allow EU to overtax US products).
The List of overtaxed nomenclatures was published in the Official Journal of the European Union* 10 November: eIt consists essentially ofproducts originating in the United States of which the Union is not highly dependent for its supply,to avoid the negative effect on certain sectors.
Depending on the products concerned, the Additional customs duty rate is different:
- +15% : aircraft;
- +25% : vanilla, orange juice, certain essential oils, handbags, wallets, loaders and tractors, among others.
NB : These surcharges are applicable the day after publication in the EU OJ.
Despite this measure, the European Union wants to resume dialogue with the United States and claims to be open to the suspension of these taxes. With the election of the new President of the United States, Brussels hopes to find a solution to this conflict which penalises many sectors other than aviation.
