Import United States: Customs Tariff Salve
After imposing taxes on Canadian, Mexican and Chinese products on Saturday, Donald Trump finally suspended the measures for his two neighbours while the European Union is on the alert. The trade war seems to be declared by the American president.
The President of the United States finally carried out his threats on Saturday 1andFebruary 2025, by signing several orders to overtax products imported from Canada, Mexico and China, which alone account for more than 40% of U.S. imports. A 25% increase in tariffs, effective February 4, had been applied to Mexican and Canadian products, triggering both countries' immediate consideration of retaliation. Two days later, the project was finally suspended for 30 days by Donald Trump, after negotiations with Canada and Mexico, respectively.
However,10 % additional customs duty on Chinese productson imports on US soil, from 4 February 2025, are still in force at the time we write these lines. According to our sources, these taxes apply toall products made in Chinaincluding those exported from the European Union. Sea cargo already in transit, having left China before the 1standFebruary 2025 and expected to arrive in the United States before March 7, 2025, should not be impacted by these additional tariffs.
China responded very quickly, but more moderately, by announcing its decision to apply 15% customs duties on imports of US coal and liquefied natural gas (LNG) and 10% on oil, as well as agricultural machinery and certain motor vehicles, from 10 February next. But we are not immune to a new twist, negotiations between Beijing and Washington could indeed change the situation at any time.
For its part, the European Union, which has, for the moment, escaped the American offensive on tariffs, is waiting and preparing to respond to any attack. The U.S. President had made it clear that it will be soon...
