US/China Trade War: Relief of Customs Surtaxes
The United States and China decided to relax their respective tariff barriers during negotiations last weekend in Geneva. On May 12, 2025, the US President signed a Decree to formalize this break in tariff escalation with China. This decision, together with similar measures on the part of the Chinese government, aims to ease the trade tensions between the two nations.
Since 14 May 2025, the rate of additional reciprocal duties on products originating in China, Hong Kong and Macao imported on U.S. territory has been increased by reduced from 125% to 10%. This decline, which is expected to last for an initial period of 90 days, applies to all imports released for consumption and covers a wide range of products. However, these rights can always be accumulated with surtax « Fentanyl » 20 per cent, thus increasing the final customs duty rate to 30 % for certain goods. On the other hand, trade measures such as section 301 and section 232 tariffs will remain in place.
The rate of customs duty applicable topostal consignments ofMinimal decline to 54% (compared to 120% before).
For its part, China also lowered the customs duty rate for US products to 10%.
Both countries undertook to continue dialogue with designated representatives on each side in order to establish more stable and mutually beneficial trade relations.
