
The ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach have been plagued by huge traffic jams since the economic recovery and are seeking solutions to smooth traffic.
In September the « Accelerate Cargo LA » has been launched and the infrastructures open 24/7 (cf. Sea freight: huge congestion in US and Chinese ports). Despite this first measure, up to 80 containers are still blocked, waiting to dock in one of the terminals of the two main ports in the US West.
In an attempt to solve the problem, the two ports have announced that fees will be in place from 1 November for:
- containers to be transported by truck which remain longer than 9 days;
- containers to be transported by train that stay 3 days or more.
In both cases, the ports will charge the shipping companies USD 100 per container and this amount will be increased by an additional USD 100 per day.
