Sea freight: the loaders at the heart of the storm

While the shippers were hoping for a lull after the Chinese New Year, in March and April the rates fell very little and they are already going up again.

Just last weekIndex global containerized freight from Shanghai(SCFI) 8.6%. The rates between Asia and Northern Europe are around USD 4,400 for a 20′ and USD 8,600 for a 40′. For connections to the port of Fos-Marseille, the finding is similar. The contagion of the increase in tariffs extended to almost all commercial routes.

To these high freight rates adds again the difficulty in finding space on container holders. Currently, it takes almost 3 weeks to ship its container from Asia. And the situation will not improve in the coming weeks if we believe the CEO of Hapag-Lloyd who said it would last for another 6 to 8 weeks!

With the blocking of the Evergeven (cf.Sea freight: what are the impacts of the Suez Canal blocking?), many container carriers have fallen behind in their connection and in order to return to normal, they have no choice but to cancel certain crossings. A return to normal is expected in the third trimester...It will still take some time to sail in this turbulent sea...
