China has just lifted health restrictions on the port of Ningbo-Zhoushan on Wednesday, 25 August. One of the terminals (Meishan) had been closed since August 11, due to a case of Covid-19 detected among employees.
Located 250 km south of Shanghai, Ningbo-Zhoushan is the third largest port in the world in tonnage (1.2 billion tons of goods in 2020) and in container numbers (28.7 million TEUs in 2020).
While the situation caused a great deal of concern in mid-August (41 vessels were waiting for a berth on 17 August compared with 28 the previous week), it did not cause as much damage as the closure of Yantian's port in May (cf.Sea freight China: chaos in the ports of the South).
The shipping companies organized themselves differently, avoiding stopping at Meishan and heading towards the other four terminals. According to the port authorities, Ningbo recorded a drop of only 10% in its activities compared to July.
The reopening is gradually taking place. This Wednesday, cargo handling operations resumed. Four container carriers should be able to take off on Friday. All operations should restart1 September, i.e. 5 days before the date originally scheduled.
