Sea freight: sailing gives a new breath to freight transport

The maritime transport sector is the main emitter of sulphur oxides and fine particulate matter and represents the largest share of the total emissions of sulphur and fine particulate matter. 3% of global CO2 emissions. In order to reduce the footprint of this mode of transport, different companies are embarking on sailing.

In 2009 Towt, today the first French sailing carrier, lifted anchor from its 1stand cargo sailboat. Today, the Breton company has 18 sailboats heading to England, Portugal, Scandinavia and across the Atlantic to deliver organic and fair trade products from and to North America and the Caribbean. Since its inception, the company has travelled 48,000 miles (80,000 km), delivered 1,000 tonnes of products and saved 450 tonnes of CO2. She even created a label, Anemos, in order to enhance these goods transported by the wind.

Born in Nantes in 2015 by a group of merchant naval officers, Neoline built cargo ships capable of transporting goods over 10 metres high and weighing 200 tonnes. The commissioning of the pilot ships is planned in 2021 on the North Atlantic between Saint-Nazaire, Saint-Pierre and Miquelon, Halifax and Baltimore and will save between 80% and 90% of fuel consumption.

As regardsGrain of Sail, their first sailing-cargo, l24 metres and a capacity of 50 tonnes, has taken off, from the port of St Malo, on November 18 to carry out its first crossing of the Atlantic. Direction New York where the boat will unload French wine before reaching the Dominican Republic and Peru, to load organic cocoa. On board, the 4 crew members expect to return to the United States in less than a month and return within 3 months with a carbon balance divided by 17 on a transatlantic segment. The company plans to lift the sail of two or three other larger cargo ships (capacity of 250 tons in each hold) by 2023.
