Historical decline in piracy in Africa
Africa recorded in 2022 « only » 300 acts of piracy, the lowest since 2008, according to « Maritime Information Cooperation & Awareness Center« , French centre of expertise dedicated to global maritime security. The main focus of this activity is East Africa and the Gulf of Guinea. The waters of the Gulf of Guinea, long considered among the most dangerous (cf.Maritime freight: increased risk of piracy in 2020), saw a drastic decrease in the number of pirated ships, from 26 in 2019 to only three since the beginning of 2023. The number of kidnapped persons also dropped from 146 in 2019 to two last year.
This decrease is due to theEnhanced international cooperationto combat this scourge, including the deployment of naval patrols and surveillance vessels, as well as the conviction of the perpetrators of piracy in Nigeria and Togo.
Disturbing increase in piracy in Asia
In contrast, in Asia, the Straits of Malacca and Singapore recorded a 50 per cent increase in piracy crimes. The International Maritime Bureau (IMB) pointed out that, despite the lowest level of incidents of piracy and armed robbery reported since 1993, vigilance remains. The 27 incidents reported in the first quarter of this year are down from 37 in the same period in 2022, but the threat of violence is palpable.
IMB points out that nearly 30% of the incidents in the first quarter of 2023 occurred in the Singapore Strait. Although the number of incidents is down from the previous year, their nature is changing, with increased hostage-taking and kidnapping.
LSouth AmericaThere also appear to be an increase in this criminal activity. In fact, Peru has proved to be an area of concern with five incidents reported in the first quarter of 2023, a figure that has remained stable in recent years, but which remains a continuing threat.
