Atlantic Sea freight – Pacific: Panama Canal Expansion
The capacity of the Panama Canal will again increase to allow large container doors to borrow.
The1 June 2018The Panama Transoceanic Passage will open to vessels over 49 metres wide (up to 51.25 metres).
64 container carriers meeting the eligibility criteria are operating worldwide, with capacity close to 15 000 TEUs. 22 new compatible vessels are currently under construction.
To date, only 11 of these sea giants are passing through the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean canal: a figure that should quickly double and boost the commercial traffic on the Far East axis – East coast of the United States.
3 major maritime alliances have planned to increase their capacity on this route by 10%:
- Ocean Alliance (CMA CGM, Cosco, Evergreen and OOCL)
- THE Alliance (Hapag-Lloyd, Yang Ming, « K » Line, Mol and NYK)
- 2M (Maersk, MSC and Hyundai MM)
The average capacity of container carriers transiting through the facility was 4,600 TEUs two years ago, and could reach 8,300 TEUs in July 2018.
