Air freight: Morocco lags behind its African neighbours!

AFRICA / MAROC

Almost 20 years later, the Single African Air Transport Market (MUTAA) is now on the agenda (cf. News February 2018).

Designed to boost intercontinental air trade, it will:

  • airlines to serve African destinations from airports other than their hubs
  • to increase competition between routes leading to more competitive rates
  • promoting intra-African trade by stimulating an additional volume of freight

Today a leading country with its national Ethiopian Airlines, Ethiopia captures almost 45% of air traffic on the continent. Its large fleet of 94 aircraft, including 8 dedicated to cargo activity, will soon have 61 additional aircraft, including 6 dedicated to freight. As a result of numerous bilateral trade liberalization agreements with African actors, Ethiopian Airlines is now one of the most profitable companies on the continent.

What about Morocco?

Ranked 7nd ranking of the African countries providing the most air cargo, Morocco with its 1.62% market share is still far behind South Africa (23%) or even Egypt (11%).

A delay which is explained by:

  • the small number of aircraft that composes the fleet of the Royal Air Maroc (RAM): 55 aircraft, of which only 1 dedicated to cargo activity. A second aircraft is currently being converted to cargo in Singapore.
  • airport infrastructure that is inadequate to the expected volumes: only Casablanca International Airport can properly receive air cargo (90% of the national air cargo volume)
  • a very recent reintegration of the Kingdom into the African Union, slowing down the conclusion of African partnerships.
