Would the storm that had been threatening the sky of the fast fashion for several months be bursting? Initiated by NGOs and environmental parties and now supported by the government, a French bill to curb ephemeral fashion will be discussed in the National Assembly on Thursday 14 March. In addition to raising consumers' awareness of the environmental impact of such an industry in order to encourage them to buy more rationally, the text provides for:environmental display obligationfor the undertakings concerned, malusup to 50% of the price of the product with a ceiling of 10 euros, but also l· ban on advertisingfor signs, including by influencers on social networks.
According to the ADEME (Environmental Transition Agency), the figures of the textile industry, on which fast fashion is a major factor, are eloquent: 100 billion clothing sold worldwide each year, 4 billion tonnes of CO2 (more than the impact of international flights and combined maritime traffic) and 20% of water pollution (including from dyeing and textile processing). Fast fashion also produces a huge amount of waste, including plastics, which is difficult to get rid of, with the polyester used in the vast majority being a material made with particularly complex fossil fuels to recycle.
It must be said that thousands of new references, mainly made in Asia, at competitive prices, flood the market daily: until470 000 models per year or 7200 per dayfor some brands! Figures that are pale and remind us that in addition to an environmental impact, there are necessarily social (non-respect of human rights) and economic (disappearance of local channels).
It now remains to be seen precisely which companies will be covered by the text. The bill proposes to use a number of new models as well as marketing time. Thresholds should be defined by decree.
On the Environment Committee's agenda today, Thursday, 7 March, this bill could still be amended before it is put to the vote next Thursday.
