United Arab Emirates (UAE): new excise duties

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has introduced new import excise duties on certain products.

The decline in oil revenues in CCG countries (Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar) since 2014 has forced them to have a less accommodative tax policy than before.

It is in this context that the United Arab Emirates (UAE) which has already announced the introduction of VAT at the rate of 5% at the beginning of 2018, such as Saudi Arabia or Qatar, have set up a system of VAT rates of 5%. excise duty on certain products such as soft drinks or energy drinks.

NB: Gaseous waters are not involved.

The new excise duties imposed on cigarettes and energy drinks amount to 100%.

Importers must register.

This decision on excise duties is in force from the beginning of October 2017.
