Human Rights: US Government Releases Reports on 200 Countries

Since 1977, the Department of State (US equivalent of the French Ministry of Europe and Foreign Affairs) has published annual individualized and comprehensive reports on respect for human rights in each country. The 2022 edition, released on March 20, presents worrying situations for some states.

In the preface of the US reports on human rights practices, the Secretary of State of the Biden administration claims that the world knew in 2022 « a record number of violations and abuses »mentioning notably the war in Ukraine, the repression carried out by the Iranian regime against its population or violence against marginalized communities such as sexual minorities (conversion therapies, forced surgery, etc.). The data used to compile these documents come from various sources, such as US embassies or consulates, members of foreign governments, NGOs or legal experts.

Like many others, Bangladesh's report, the key Asian textile industry, is overwhelming in many respects. Corruption, torture, discrimination, freedom of expression violated: the situation portrayed in the analysis ofDepartment of Statecriminalizes the country's police, legal and political institutions. The NGO Human Rights Watch reported in January on arbitrary abductions by the government against journalists, members of the opposition and even students. Corruption is judged « endemic, and anti-corruption efforts have been weakened by politicized application » According to Freedom House. Finally, sanctions in relation to labour law affect « more often employees than employers »and adults as children may find themselves forced into forced labour in the form of domestic servitude.

These global human rights reports are an indispensable tool for comprehensive CSR risk mapping.
