US customs duties: a new respite granted to the EU until 1 August 2025
The trade arm between the United States and the European Union is continuing. After a new series of tariff threats, the US President finally postponed the application of surcharges on European imports (cf. Decree of 7 July 2025). « Extending the modification of the reciprocal tariff rates« ). The sentence, supposed to fall on 9 July (cf. US customs duties: Trump threatens European products and then makes volte-faceOn 1 August 2025, the European Union was extended to negotiate. According to Donald Trump, no further postponement will be granted.
To date (but any change is possible at any time!), the additional surcharge rate for European imports to the United States amounts to 25% on cars, 50% on steel and aluminium and 10% on about 70% of other goods. Unless reversed, these rates are expected to remain at this level until 1 August.
Since the US President announced last April, only two agreements have been concluded, one with the United Kingdom and the other with Vietnam. On Monday, July 7, Donald Trump wrote letters of tariff threats to 14 partner countries including Japan, South Korea, Bangladesh, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines and Thailand. And reiterated the action on Wednesday 9 July by sending a letter to six new countries in surplus trade with the United States: Algeria, the Sultanate of Brunei, Iraq, Libya, Moldova and the Philippines.
