The government of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has decided to officially change the name of his country. The English version « Turkey » was thus abandoned on 1 June 2022 for the benefit of thenew official name « Republic of Türkiye » may be abbreviated by « Türkiye », the leader considers thatrepresents and best expresses the culture, civilization and values of the Turkish nation. As the international community has been invited to recognize this new definition, the United Nations, the World Trade Organization and NATO have already adopted it.
European Commission recommends to operatorsaffix name « Türkiye » to designate the Republic of Turkey on certificates of preferential origin, movement certificates and declarations/certificates of originon trade documents issued by or for the attention of Turkey. Turkish authorities should continue to accept proof of origin and traffic certificates bearing the old name « Turkey » for an undefined transitional period, but it is preferable to proceed with the change now.
This is not the first time a country has changed its name. Sri Lanka, Iran and Thailand, among others, have already been renamed.
