Cosmetics, textiles, farts: France bans PFAS in 2026
Since 1 January 2026, France has taken a major step in the fight against toxic substances: the ban on PFAS (perfluoroalkylated and polyfluoroalkylated substances), dubbed « eternal pollutants »is now in force. This measure, resulting from Act No. 2025-188 of 27 February 2025, aims to protect consumer health and the environment. PFAS, used for their anti-stain, waterproof or non-stick properties, are persistent, toxic and accumulate in the environment and the human body, with proven health risks.
From this year onwards, the manufacture, import, export and sale of the following products containing PFAS are strictly prohibited in France:
- Cosmetics (creams, makeup, etc.);
- Farts for skis and other sliding products;
- Textiles, footwear and waterproofing ().
Companies have until 1 January 2027 to sell their manufactured inventory before 2026. This transitional period allows a smooth transition while accelerating the search for alternatives without PFAS. It should be noted that by 2030 the ban will extend to all textiles (including furniture), with exceptions for essential uses, such as industrial technical textiles.
This law is part of a to limit exposure to PFAS. France is one of the first countries to act so quickly, sending a strong signal to industry and consumers. Next step: the government will publish by 2026 a , and , because these substances also contaminate drinking water resources.
