COP30: a contrasting balance sheet, but a clear signal for businesses
COP30 ended on 22 November with a strong disappointment: no roadmap was adopted for the release of fossil fuels. Some progress has been made, including a Fair Transition Mechanism and the opening of a dialogue on global trade tensions. In a context where the CSDD and omnibus are declining, the signal sent remains unclear but the need for action remains strategic for businesses.
What to remember
COP30 was completed without any progress on the gradual release of fossil fuels: the road map supported by nearly 90 countries disappeared from the final text. Instead, one Global Implementation Accelerator, voluntary initiative, is announced.
The conference, however, adopted a Fair transition mechanism, which for the first time in a COP recognises human rights, labour rights, the protection of vulnerable communities and the need for social support for transitions.
Finally, the final decision opens a new chapter: global trade tensions (customs duties, carbon adjustment at borders, etc.) will be subject to a three-year dialogue in the climate negotiations.
In summary, COP30 leaves a global climate landscape with no clear focus on fossil fuels, but recalls that social, economic and commercial transition dynamics will continue to evolve. In this changing environment, companies can no longer simply wait: they must secure their trajectory and anticipate.
