Bulgaria: changeover to the euro in 2026
The Commission and the European Central Bank gave their green light on 4 June 2025 for the Bulgaria joins the euro area as from 1 January 2026, becoming the 21st EU Member State to adopt the single currency, after Croatia three years ago. The decision will be officially announced on 8 July, but no opposition is expected, as Sofia already meets several criteria required by the Maastricht Treaty: price stability, controlled public finances, low long-term interest rates and participation in the European Exchange Mechanism since 10 July 2020. The President of the European Commission, Ursula van der Leyen, has already congratulated the country.
In force since 1885, the Bulgarian lev, already secured to the euro for 25 years, will be definitively replaced by the single currency in six months. The conversion rate was set at 1,95583 levs for 1 euro, parity already established under the monetary anchor. A period of double price display is foreseen for one year and withdrawals in local currency are expected to cease gradually as early as January.
