BREXIT: Back up for better... back up?

On the night of April 10-11, the European Parliament and the British Prime Minister agreed on a postponement of the Brexit: the new deadline is now 31 October 2019... provided that the United Kingdom organises the European elections in May!

As mentioned last week (cf.BREXIT: « No means no! ») , the request to extend the EU's exit deadline for the United Kingdom was validated at the European Council and set at 31/10/2019.

But the 27 imposed their conditions in return for this calming gesture:

  • Almost immediate effect of the withdrawal agreement in the event of ratification by the British Parliament (on the first day of the following month)
  • Impossibility of further delaying the termination of separation (31/10/2019)
  • Mandatory exit (« No deal ») on 1 June 2019 if the United Kingdom does not organise the European elections (23-26 May 2019)
  • No possible changes to the withdrawal agreement (which was already rejected by the British Parliament three times...)
  • No negotiations on future EU/UK relations before the effective entry into force (or cancellation) of Brexit
  • Pending its exit from the European Union, the United Kingdom remains a full member state « with all its rights and duties«

The next deadline in the Brexit saga is therefore the 22 May 2019 : on that date, if the withdrawal agreement is not validated by the British in the meantime, the United Kingdom must participate in the elections of the European Parliament... or go out on 1 June with a « No deal ».
