BREXIT: Theresa May's devastating defeat in the British Parliament

The UK EU exit agreement was rejected Tuesday 15 January 2019 in the UK Parliament with a 230-vote gap. Sadly historic defeat that will remain in the memories according to the commentators, masterful setbacks for Prime Minister Theresa May, and possible chaos to come for European trade...

The vote on draft separation agreement between the European Union and the United Kingdomfinally took place Tuesday night in the British Parliament (cf. BREXIT: vote by the United Kingdom Parliament « around » of 15 January 2019), and resulted in a massive rejection of the text, acknowledging the singular failure of Theresa May.

A motion of distrust was tabled by the Labour opposition in order to push Theresa May to the exit door: a motion that was finally rejected.

The Prime Minister has until Monday 21 Januaryto present an alternative solutionto the deputies: a very tight timing and little room for negotiation with the 27... as much as saying that a consensual plan B would be miraculous!

4 scenarios are currently on the table:

  • « No Deal » leading to a hard Brexit (Hard Brexit) on 30 March 2019;
  • Deferral of deadline 29/03/19 of a few weeks leaving the two parties a wider negotiating window;
  • Second referendum leading British citizens to speak again;
  • Plan B accepted by MEPs and allowing for the extension of the separation negotiations with Brussels until 31/12/2020 (Soft Brexit)
