BREXIT: possible agreement between EU and United Kingdom
Two weeks before the deadline, the European Union and the United Kingdom are announcing that they are moving towards an agreement... but crucial steps still need to be taken!
On Thursday 17 October 2019, Boris Johnson, British Prime Minister, and Jean-Claude Juncker, President of the European Commission, publicly declared that: Agreement on the exit of the United Kingdom from the European Union had just been concluded between the two parties.
The transition period would last at least until the end of 2020, time to establish a trade agreement.
The main change from the previously negotiated agreement with Theresa May is the end of the famous « backstop », so disputed by the Hard Brexiters because it left the United Kingdom in a customs union with the EU (cf. BREXIT: in J – 3 months, always so much uncertainty...).
The mechanism found is that Customs controls are carried out between Great Britain and Ireland.
However, before this agreement enters into force, it will have to be validated by the European Council and the British Parliament, which will meet exceptionally Saturday, 19 October The North Irish Unionist Party and Labour have already announced that they will vote against... Boris Johnson will have to be persuasive.
