Southeast Asia: Robotization increases the risk of modern slavery

Theme:

International CSR

Country:

Asia (ASEAN – ASEAN)

According to International Labour Organization (ILO) estimates, more than half of workers will lose their jobs due to automation of manufacturing lines by 2040 in 5 Asian countries: Cambodia, Indonesia, Thailand, Philippines and Vietnam .

Vulnerable workers with neither the capacity to adapt nor effective social protection will be more competitive for low-skilled, low-paid and fewer jobs.

According to a recent study by a British human rights analysis firm*There are three categories of risks that affect workers today:

  • country risk: inherent in governance
  • sector risk: industry related
  • Category risk: by population category

These 5 ASEAN member countries** will be the most impacted by robotization:250,000 industrial robots will flood the market next year, according to the International Robotics Federation.

To Vietnam67% of workers (36 million people) will seek alternative livelihoods in an environment in which the risk of human exploitation is already raised.

Without the efforts and mobilization of states to help future generations work alongside machines, workers in these countries will not be able to enjoy a decent standard of living.

Textile industry – clothing, traditionally a strong labour-intensive sector, is the sector most exposed to the risk of downgrading workers in this area. This industrial sector employ only 59% of all workers in the manufacturing industry Cambodia !

Women They are on the front line because they occupy the majority of low-skilled jobs:More than 76% of jobs classified as high risk of modern slavery in Vietnam and Cambodia...

This means that more than 3 million Vietnamese and Cambodian women are at risk of losing their jobs, and will have to fight for work in an industry already exposed to a high risk of violations of labour law throughout ASEAN.
