Algeria: Dissolution of the Algex and establishment of two foreign trade bodies
Algex will disappear in favour of two structures designed to simplify import procedures and boost exports. A change to anticipate for companies trading with Algeria.
On 13 April 2025, Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune officially announced the abolition of the Algex (National Agency for the Promotion of Foreign Trade), a historic pillar of the Algerian trade regulation system. This dissolution marks an important step in the country's foreign trade reform. Created in 2004, the Algex was responsible for regulating imports, including through its import licensing system, and for boosting exports. The Algex platform is already closed.
In place, two new bodies will be created here end of May 2025 One dedicated to regulating imports and the other to promoting exports. These mechanisms aim to simplify procedures and formalities and to better support economic operators in their efforts. Their scope and procedures are not yet known. At the same time, a one-stop shop is planned to be set up within two to three months.
This reform is part of a broader strategy to diversify the Algerian economy, increase non-hydrocarbon exports and achieve a gross domestic product (GDP) of $400 billion by 2027. Companies importing their goods into Algeria will have to adapt to this new regulatory framework, anticipating changes and adjusting their procedures accordingly.
