REACH Alert: 4 new banned substances

The European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) has just added four substances to the List of Substances of Extreme Concern (SVHC) due to their serious effects on human health and the environment.

On July 16, 2019, ECHA announced the integration of 4 new substances on the Candidate List of Substances of Extreme Concern (SVHC) :

  • 2-methoxyethyl acetate (not registered under REACH)
  • Tris(4-nonylphenyl, branched and linear) phosphite (TNP) with ≥ 0.1% w/w of 4-nonylphenol, branched and linear (4-NP)
  • 2,3,3-tetrafluoro-2-(heptafluoropropoxy)propionic acid, its salts and its acyl halodes (covering any of their individual isomers and combinations thereof)
  • 4-tert-butylphenol

They are identified as carcinogenic, mutagenic and reprotoxic (CMR), persistent, bioaccumulative and toxic (PBT) and very persistent and highly bioaccumulative (vPvB).

Check daily the evolution of the status of SVHC substances and anticipate the bans in Annex XIV of REACH!

ATTENTION

Listing on this list entails immediate obligations for suppliers of these substances.

Any supplier of articles containing SVHC in a concentration greater than 0,1 % (by weight) has communication obligations to customers throughout the supply chain.

Importers and producers of articles containing one of these new SVHCs must inform ECHA within six months, i.e. before 16 January 2020.

NB: substances on the list are then likely to be banned or subject to authorisation (Annex XIV).
