EU/United Kingdom agreement: final approval by the European Parliament

Four months after reaching an agreement with the United Kingdom, the European Union has just definitively validated it.

The European Parliament's vote was the final stage for the trade agreement between the United Kingdom and the European Union, signed just before the end of the transitional period (cf. BREXIT: signature in extremis of an EU/UK free trade agreement).

This provisional agreement Since 1 January 2021 Parliament had yet to obtain the green light for Final implementation This was done because MEPs approved the text on Wednesday 28 April by 660 votes out of 697.

An official validation more than necessary, as the provisional application of the agreement ended at the end of April and London had already ruled out any extension...

This agreement provides a legislative framework for new trade relations between the European Union and the United Kingdom. Despite this, tensions persist in particular on the Irish protocol (cf.EU/UK Trade Agreement: constructive talks on Northern Ireland...) or on fisheries, subjects which from the beginning of negotiations created dissension.
