This agreement, which was implemented in 2006, is far from meeting the expectations raised at the time of its signature: in 2016, the Moroccan exports have totaled less than 1/6nd trade between the two partners, i.e. 0.4 billion USD out of a total of 3 billion USD...
The fall of foreign direct investment (IDE) US between 2015 and 2016 (-56%) confirms the trend. To date, only a few automotive manufacturers (many sites in the free zone), educational institutions and franchises of major American brands have chosen to establish themselves in Moroccan territory.
On the Moroccan side, exporters were confronted with a strict US regulations (compliance with market requirements) and a lack of English-speaking human resources. Other major obstacles to the development of exports from Morocco across the Atlantic, an undersized national production apparatus for large volumes and the very high logistics costs to the United States.
